"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have also petitioned for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to start a band."

Grammy Milestone

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

Yet the band will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
